I’m not going to lie I was a little nervous when they brought out matching t-shirts. Not because I’m an enneagram 4 and would rather not wear a uniform. I was apprehensive because I thought our Americanized mission mindset made its way to the Dominican Republic. Go in wearing a matching tee, build a house, say a prayer, and leave. After our welcome orientation with Brad the found of Until They Know, I was able to have a sign of relief.

UTK is all about building and maintaining relationships, supporting and encouraging neighboring communities, and sharing the gospel. They are passionate about showing up to communities with open ears and closed mouths. As a ministry they are wanting to partner and help with whatever needs the community has. Doing good works is great, building houses, providing water filters, or whatever physical thing we can provide it good. There’s nothing wrong with that but UTK wants to dive deep with people. They want to love people well and take time to listen to them. Brad said something that sticks with me as we walk through the communities. “They don’t need the American Jesus, they need the truth. We have to do missions with perspective. It’s about them not us. It’s all about them coming to Jesus.”

A popular dish in the Dominican Republic is Somos Sancocho. It is made with different roots, corn, plantains, and meats. UTK uses Sancocho as a metaphor for their ministry. Everyone and every place has value. Just like every ingredient in sancocho has value. My teammate went into great detail about sancocho, go back it out Antoinette’s blog!

Our days consist of going to communities Monday’s, Wednesday’s, and Friday’s in the mornings. Coming home for lunch and heading back out to different communities. While we’re there we play with the kiddos, walk around while praying, and going to different homes to pray for people. Tuesday’s and Thursday morning we have Bible study and meetings then after lunch go to the communities.

It’s a lot of relational time which we love and it’s a blessing how frequently we will be able to go out to each community. It’s not about going in, passing something out, saying a quick prayer, and never looking back as we drive away. We go into people’s homes or place of work and listen to what they’re struggling with and need prayer for. Or just insight into their lives. We have been here for around a week and I already feel at home. My team and I are so excited to continue the relationship we started in even just a short week.

If you would like to know more about UTK or how you can even support them they’re website is www.utk223.org what they are doing here is amazing. Please keep them in your prayers and go check out more about that they’re doing!
